I met Marilo last November. She was referred to me by a friend and industry associate. Marilo was looking for some social media help and digital marketing. We spoke briefly by phone and quickly set up a face-to-face. You know that (pleasantly surprising) feeling you get, when you meet someone for the first time and know that you’ll become fast friends? That’s how I felt about Marilo. I think what stood out most for me was her honesty, directness, and kindness.
She comes from Cadiz, Spain. The first time she sent me a picture of what has also been referred to by travelers as an “underrated corner of Spain” it took my breath away. Isn’t this gorgeous?
Cádiz is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe and it’s documented that traces of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and North African Muslims, who once ruled these lands can all be found on a short walk through the old town!
Marilo moved to the states in 1998 and settled in San Francisco for five years before moving to Gilbert where she opened Salon Lola (April 2009.) The name was inspired by her English bulldog, Lola. In Spain, the name Lola also refers to all things “girly,” so it seemed like the perfect fit!
As we were becoming better acquainted, and even now nearly a year later – she tells me, “Jackie! My love for style – como se llama – consumes me!” She is an artist in her own right and it’s no wonder as a dedicated and loyal hairstylist she trains in various courses throughout the country. Her latest on the books is to be a featured stylist alongside world renowned Nick Arrojo (What Not to Wear) learning new techniques and modern razor cutting methods.
Aside from learning about what’s new in the industry, Marilo strives for perfection with each face-framing style. She doesn’t double book appointments. When you’re in her chair, you have her undivided attention. Her appointments include a consultation. Word to the wise: Prepare for honesty. She will not over-promise and under-deliver. Sometimes a good style or desired color requires some growing out or reparative treatment to damaged hair. She’s touted as one of the best Balayage experts in the southwest – there’s a reason for that. She understands that the quality of a person’s hair – the health, strength and even the current style & cut has EVERYTHING to do with what she will ultimately deliver. So be patient. Loving your hair and having a good hair day even 10 weeks after a visit with Marilo is worth the wait!
So, I mentioned 3 things about Marilo at the start of this article. I covered the first two: stylist & perfectionist. I’ll simply touch on the third – optimist. As mature women (and I speak for myself as well, because I have about 10 years on Marilo) let’s just say we’ve experienced a thing or two in life.
Not all of it is pleasant – some of it takes time to learn from and overcome. Marilo’s optimism about people, unpleasant circumstances, and life in general is refreshing.
She always sees the bright side and somehow, she finds a way to share that with everyone. I love that about her. She’s kind and caring. Mostly, she’s grateful. She recognizes that finding happiness in the present moment is easy; that it’s in the small things. She is the quintessential optimist.
